STCW Elementary First Aid (EFA)

Course Content

• The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs
• The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient
• The recognition and treatment of a person after a seizure
• The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) including an overview of AEDs (automated external defibrillator)
• The ability to recognise and safely treat a patient who is choking
• The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding
• The recording of simple records following an accident
• The recovery position in a confined space
• Drowning
• Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
• Seasickness and dehydration
• Medical assistance or advice by VHF
• Helicopter rescue
• Category C Medical Stores

Please note: First Aid is not included in the compulsory Refresher (Update) training. However, the STCW Elementary First Aid certificate remains the basic qualification required for all seafarers. It is strongly recommended to renew this certification every five years, as it may be required by certain vessels or employers.

If you are using your STCW Elementary First Aid certificate to authorise you to skipper small vessels under an RYA Commercial Endorsement or as part of an instructor qualification, you must renew your STCW First Aid certificate every five years.
